# Tommy Tallarico — controlled opposition, product vacuum, and David Wise parallel

> **TL;DR:** Tallarico and David Wise are the **same class of useful industry face** — meager-to-moderate entry connections out of menial/normal life into a then-underwatched medium — but Tallarico had **more stage/PR power and pressure** (VGL crowds, Virgin lane, TV) without a durable **product**, so he kept hunting one (fan-labor *Earthworm Jim Anthology*, then **Amico**). **Author (Protricity):** objected on OCR when Tallarico solicited remixes for a commercial album; staff framed it as fine; **Wormaphobic Disorder** still shipped on *Earthworm Jim Anthology* (2006) with Protricity remix credit ([VGMdb](https://vgmdb.net/album/4304); [OCR album page](https://ocremix.org/album/4081/earthworm-jim-anthology); [Discogs](https://www.discogs.com/release/1810185-Tommy-Tallarico-Earthworm-Jim-Anthology)). Years later: documented plagiarism/credit inflation bust ([hbomberguy 2022](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_Tallarico)). **Scale:** Wise is accused of **stealing far more credits** than Tallarico ever did (Rare one-name warehouse). **He was not the wiser** — the “wisdom” came **later**: stay out of prime light; ship **simple unlosable indie garbage** that never has to mirror the OST brilliance attached to his stolen nouns. Tallarico stayed in the spotlight hunting products and got **caught**. Cross: [dave-wise.md](../dave-wise.md) claim 28; [tommy-tallarico.md](../tommy-tallarico.md).

**Status:** Open — pattern registry + sourced backup of author stakes. Not a courtroom handler proof.

## 1. Author originating thesis

> Tallarico and Dave Wise were exactly the same useful idiot with meager connections that got them into an industry that no one was paying attention to and out of a menial job or otherwise normal life. Tallarico had serious industry connections and more pressure / ability to succeed — crowds, big performances — but he didn’t have a product. He kept trying to find that product; at one point he appeared on the OCR forum asking people to help make an Earthworm Jim remix album he could sell. I objected; staff reprimanded me / made it seem it wouldn’t be a problem. He got the album; even though I said no, he sold my remix — **Wormaphobic Disorder**. Years after I accused him of plagiarism, he was accused in a big media controversy. Most important: independent projects — he tried a game console that siphoned money and wasted time. Someone that close to Nintendo should know basics of competitive products. Both were **corporate-sponsored on the backend and designed to funnel the fan base into a dead end** on resisting Nintendo through competition or investigating Nintendo’s inner workings. Nintendo operated more like a shared call center — corporations loaned / used labor, then abandoned 2D craft for 3D, leaving Nintendo’s reputation damaged while PR stayed airtight (Disney-class). Older fans livid; Tallarico is controlled-opposition maintaining a career. **Wise might not have been the wiser** — he stole **far more** credits than Tallarico ever did. The “wisdom” came **later**: staying out of the prime light and sticking to simple unlosable garbage indie games that in no way mirrored the OST brilliance of the songs he stole credit for. Same corporate distraction — close to fans, never a path to compete with that industry. That is the larger conclusion for both investigations.

**What that means (unpack):**

| Layer | Author meaning |
|-------|----------------|
| Same entry class | Menial/retail door → industry face (not craft lineage from Kyoto/R&D) |
| Tallarico ≠ weaker connections | **More** PR/stage/Virgin heat → **more pressure** to produce a sellable “product” |
| No product | Inflated credit nouns + touring + fan-labor albums + console vapor ≠ competing platform |
| OCR Anthology | Fan community as unpaid R&D / catalog filler for commercial face |
| Amico | Failed “competition” theater — siphon + latency, not a real Nintendo rival |
| CO / dead end | Fan-proximate figure who **occupies** anti-corporate / nostalgia energy without delivering audit or competitive craft |
| Theft scale | **Wise ≫ Tallarico** — Rare SNES–2009 one-name warehouse vs EWJ/filmography inflation |
| Not wiser — later wisdom | Survival strategy **after** the haul: dim spotlight; **unlosable indie garbage** that never has to match stolen OST brilliance; Tallarico stayed in prime light and got caught |

## 2. Documented entry — parallel origin stories

| | Tommy Tallarico | David Wise |
|--|-----------------|------------|
| Pre-industry | Homeless / broke in SoCal; **Guitar Center** keyboard sales ([LA Times 1997](https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1997-aug-11-fi-21488-story.html); [HEXUS](https://hexus.net/gaming/features/industry/6976-tommy-tallarico-changing-world-video-game-music/)) | College dropout; **crisp factory**; **music shop** Leicester ([Irish Independent](https://www.independent.ie/entertainment/games/veteran-composer-david-wise-on-donkey-kong-country-battletoads-and-his-chance-start-in-the-games-industry/36266585.html)) |
| Door | First customer = **Virgin Mastertronic** exec → tester → music ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_Tallarico)) | Stampers / **Rare** via Yamaha CX5 demo |
| Early heat | Virgin Interactive lane; TV (*Electric Playground*); later **Video Games Live** (2002–) with Jack Wall | Rare house name; DKC poster; then TF “return” |
| Author read | Same **poverty → willing face** class; Tallarico got **hotter sponsorship surface** sooner | Quieter British stakeholder; **larger stolen catalog**; later dim-light “wisdom” |

**Documented:** both retail-keyboard → industry hire stories. **Author:** not proof of handlers — proof of **recruitable** entry psychology (see [poverty-desperation-questionable-media-faces.md](poverty-desperation-questionable-media-faces.md)).

## 3. Product vacuum — what he built on the “indie / fan” front

### 3.1 *Earthworm Jim Anthology* (2006) — fan remix labor → commercial SKU

- **Documented:** Commercial CD, Tommy Tallarico Records / Studios, **2006-09-21** ([OCR album listing](https://ocremix.org/album/4081/earthworm-jim-anthology); [VGMdb 4304](https://vgmdb.net/album/4304)).
- Includes OCR-community arrangers: Danny Baranowsky, Mazedude, **Protricity**, Rayagon, The OneUps ([OCR credits](https://ocremix.org/album/4081/earthworm-jim-anthology)).
- Track **08 — Wormaphobic Disorder (Tangerine Remix)** — remix by **Protricity** ([Discogs](https://www.discogs.com/release/1810185-Tommy-Tallarico-Earthworm-Jim-Anthology); VGMdb liner notes).
- Original OCR post of the remix: [OCR00766 — Earthworm Jim 2 “Wormaphobic Disorder”](https://ocremix.org/remix/OCR00766).
- Wikipedia OCR page: Tallarico’s Anthology **“includes tracks originally submitted to OC ReMix by other arrangers”** — cited as early commercial use of OCR material ([Wikipedia: OverClocked ReMix](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OverClocked_ReMix)).

**Author field (L3):** Tallarico solicited help on the OCR forums for a sellable EWJ remix album; author objected; staff minimized / reprimanded; album proceeded; author’s track shipped despite refusal. **Forum thread archive not yet re-located in this pass** — treat solicitation/consent dispute as **author testimony** pending Wayback/OCR search; **shipment of Wormaphobic Disorder on the commercial disc is documented**.

**Author read:** Classic **backend sponsorship / front fan labor** — community fills the product hole the credit-face could not.

### 3.2 Video Games Live — crowds without a competing platform

- Co-founded **2002** with Jack Wall; touring orchestral VGM spectacle; EMI *Volume One* (2008) Abbey Road / major-label packaging ([Engadget](https://www.engadget.com/2008-07-11-video-games-live-to-release-cd.html)).
- OCR promotional CDs as VGL contest prizes from **2008**; remixes played pre-show at Kennedy Center 2007 ([Wikipedia OCR](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OverClocked_ReMix)).

**Author read:** Maximum **fan proximity** and prestige — still not a hardware/software competitor. Occupies “game music culture” without opening Nintendo’s craft/credit books.

### 3.3 Intellivision Amico — the failed “product”

- Tallarico acquires Intellivision stake / founds Intellivision Entertainment (**2018**); announces **Amico** (target Oct 2020) ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_Tallarico)).
- Repeated delays; SEC-era disclosures of **no revenue**, large debt, possible never-shipping console ([Ars Technica](https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2022/02/debt-stricken-intellivision-asks-for-more-funds-to-last-past-july/); [Time Extension](https://www.timeextension.com/news/2022/02/intellivision-admits-its-wii-like-amico-console-may-never-see-release)).
- Steps down as CEO (**2022**); remains in creative/board roles ([IGN](https://www.ign.com/articles/intellivision-ceo-tommy-tallarico-steps-down)).
- Amico demo assets controversy (copied assets) reported in industry press (see TechRaptor roundup in Amico debt coverage).

**Author read:** Someone marketed as industry-connected enough to “know how Nintendo works” instead burns years and capital on a **non-competitor** — perfect **dead-end funnel** for fans who wanted an alternative platform story. Matches “siphoned money and wasted time.”

## 4. Credit theft / inflation — documented fallout (after author accusation)

| Item | Status |
|------|--------|
| EWJ1/2 composition nouns vs Tony Bernetich et al. | **Documented** dispute / corrections — see [tommy-tallarico.md](../tommy-tallarico.md) |
| False / inflated filmography | **Documented** in preservation community + **hbomberguy** essay **Nov 2022** ([Wikipedia Tallarico](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_Tallarico)) |
| Roblox “oof” ownership claims contested in same essay | **Documented** controversy |
| Author accused plagiarism years earlier (OCR era / Anthology fight) | **Author chronology** — public bust lands **later**; not proof author caused it |

**Author read:** Pressure to succeed without craft product → **inflate nouns** → eventually visible. Wise’s peak haul was **larger** and quieter (Rare warehouse); the visibility avoidance is the **later** play (§6), not innate shrewdness at the door.

---

## 5. Larger industry frame — Nintendo “call center,” 3D cut, airtight PR

**Author structural read (not a single memo):**

1. Mid-90s platform rupture / IP fights already in Hamano dossier (§ rupture, CD-i, Square).
2. Craft labor treated as **loanable / discardable** when format marketing demanded **3D discontinuity** — older 2D audiences feel betrayed; PR never admits internal credit/IP wound (Disney-class airtight ship).
3. Fan anger at Nintendo decisions is **real**; Tallarico/Wise-class figures sit **adjacent** to that anger (nostalgia concerts, “indie” alumni games, fake console competition) **without** giving fans tools to **compete** or **investigate** the craft/credit system.
4. **Motivations connected:** not “Tallarico vs Nintendo war,” but **shared containment** — controlled-opposition surface that **looks** like fan-side industry access.

**Documented anchors for pieces of this (not the whole handler claim):** CD-i without R&D; Rare blank credits; Sound Team / Music app opacity; Returns→Freeze Hamano demotion — [minako-hamano-investigation.md](minako-hamano-investigation.md). Amico failure + VGL/OCR funnel — this file §3. Tallarico/Wise entry myths — §2.

## 6. Wise vs Tallarico — contrast matrix

| Dimension | Tallarico | Wise (author) |
|-----------|-----------|----------------|
| Entry | Guitar Center → Virgin | Crisp factory → music shop → Rare |
| Stage power | VGL, TV, Amico fundraising | Interviews, TF “return,” MAGFest-class sets — then **retreat** from prime light |
| Theft scale | EWJ / filmography inflation — **caught** on a smaller surface | **Far larger** — SNES–2009 Rare one-name warehouse (author: R&D launder) |
| Product hunt | Anthology (fan labor), Amico (failed console) — stayed in prime light | Peak catalog → then **simple unlosable indie** that never mirrors stolen OST brilliance |
| Backend / front | EMI/VGL/Intellivision money + fan OCR labor | Nintendo/Rare/Playtonic/Sumo + legend marketing |
| Hex / craft myth | Openly “know nothing about programming”; MIDI salesman | **Smoking gun:** still narrates “could have used MIDI / 64k blocker” in 2011 — MIDI ask to real engineers, not hex composer ([dave-wise.md](../dave-wise.md) claim 29) |
| Bust | **Caught** (2022 essay + Amico collapse) | Legend held — **not** because he was wiser at the door |
| “Wisdom” | None — spotlight + product vacuum | **Later:** dim light + garbage indie that can’t be compared to DKC-class stolen nouns |
| Fan function | Dead-end “competition” + concert proximity | Dead-end nostalgia / credit face; absorbs Kyoto nouns on TF |
| Same class? | **Author: yes** — useful face; corporate distraction | **Author: same class; bigger haul; later survival play** |

---

## 7. Author’s open claims (pattern registry)

1. Tallarico and Wise are the **same useful-face class** (poverty/menial exit → industry noun).
2. Tallarico’s **stronger connections/stage power** increased pressure and made the **missing product** more visible.
3. *Earthworm Jim Anthology* = commercial product filled with **OCR fan labor**; author refused; **Wormaphobic Disorder** still sold (shipment **documented**; consent fight **author**).
4. Amico = intentional or structural **dead-end** “competition” that wastes fan/investor energy.
5. Both figures are **corporate-sponsored backend / indie-popular front** — controlled-opposition distraction relative to auditing Nintendo craft/credit or building real competitive craft.
6. Fan hatred of Tallarico and fan hatred of Nintendo decisions are **connected motivations** (containment adjacency), not a market war between them.
7. **Wise was not the wiser.** He stole **far more** than Tallarico. The “wisdom” came **later**: out of prime light; **unlosable indie garbage** that does not mirror the brilliance of the OSTs he took credit for. Tallarico stayed visible hunting products and got caught.
8. **Wise fraud tell in own words (smoking gun):** SNES “we could have used MIDI, but… 64k…” ([Nintendojo](https://www.nintendojo.com/features/interviews/interview-david-wise)) = (a) car-salesman doublespeak, (b) he still narrates the **MIDI ask / blocker**, not hex mastery — fingerprint of MIDI-only operator querying real engineers; **not the hex composer** ([dave-wise.md](../dave-wise.md); Hamano claim 29).

## 8. Questions to clarify, verify, or debunk

| # | Question | Priority |
|---|----------|----------|
| Q1 | Wayback / OCR forum: Tallarico thread soliciting Anthology remixes; any staff replies re: commercial use / consent? | High |
| Q2 | Anthology contracts or emails — remixer licenses, payment, opt-out? | High |
| Q3 | Map Intellivision investor list / board overlaps with prior VGL/Virgin networks | Medium |
| Q4 | Parallel geometry: Playtonic/Sumo “indie” Wise shelf vs Amico “indie console” — same sponsorship class? | Medium |
| Q5 | Any Tallarico statement on Nintendo competitive strategy that contradicts Amico competence claim | Low |

---

## 9. Weak points / TODOs

- [ ] Recover OCR forum primary for solicitation + staff response (author memory alone is L3).
- [ ] Confirm Protricity ↔ author identity once in Investigator notes only if needed for maintainers.
- [ ] Keep plagiarism case detail in [tommy-tallarico.md](../tommy-tallarico.md); don’t duplicate full EWJ tables here.
- [ ] CO / “handler” language stays **author structural read** — Amico + Anthology + VGL are **documented behaviors**, not NSA memos.
