# Nintendo — vassal hardware, market consolidation, and self-sabotage (open)

> **TL;DR:** Open investigation of whether Nintendo’s console era runs as (1) an early **Japanese craft-first** company that made the best product it could (Famicom/NES), then (2) after **SNES partner silicon + CD-ROM IP rupture**, entered a **multi-decade pattern** of decisions that look like **self-sabotage** and **credit consolidation** — N64 as **2D downgrade**, franchise neglect, remaster credit wipes — while other firms shipped the games Nintendo abandoned. **Author thesis:** not “designed to fail from day one,” but **linchpins** (partner chips, format licensing, later credit/IP policy) that foreign and domestic elite interests could pull; postwar Japan was reorganized by the West (chiefly **US SCAP**, with British/Yakuza containment threads in sibling dossier). Hardware focus: Famicom stack ≠ forced uncompetitiveness; **SNES CD royalty/format lock** was the real choke; **SPC700** = Sony audio supply (switchable in principle) ≠ Super Disc licensing (not). Cross: [VACUUM_INVERSE.md](/docs/VACUUM_INVERSE.md); [minako-hamano-investigation.md](minako-hamano-investigation.md); [nintendo-sony-breakup.md](../nintendo-sony-breakup.md); [yakuza-remote-control-investigation.md](/governance/war/investigations/yakuza-remote-control-investigation.md).

**Status:** Open — timeline + hardware + sabotage pattern registry. Author thesis first-class; **not** a proved “British owned Nintendo” filing.

## 1. Author originating thesis

> Nintendo may have operated non-independently at points — following orders or incentives from abroad — inside a multi-decade effort to **unify and consolidate** the gaming market behind its flag, then **roll back** what it allowed to be created to enforce lasting subtle control. Sabotaging itself so other players released roughly the games Nintendo would have made. Hardware is the hinge: was the NES designed with other industry hands in the pot who could force uncompetitiveness? SNES already had Sony’s **SPC** sound path; the **CD-ROM debacle** (Sony/Philips going after **IP/licensing**) was the real kill. Refusing SNES↔NES backwards compatibility was a mistake that obsolete’d the prior library; add-on / dual-cart / sound-chip plugin paths were imaginable (and partial analogs exist). N64 **should not have happened** as the answer to 3D competitors who would not work with them — it was a **downgrade for 2D** after DKC-class pre-render peak; Killer Instinct shows arcade/SNES fidelity vs N64 mush. One move eliminates 2D/sequence-music craft tradition as Redbook/CD audio makes chip music optional. Later: franchise neglect (“never ours, we outsourced”), Country→DK64→shaped *Returns*, Metroid mishandling, *Prime 4* disaster with **Hamano listed like a blame sink**. Price/IP hardening, pirate war, killing own retro availability — **not** simple for-profit. Not “designed to fail from the beginning,” but **linchpins** in leadership/partner silicon that foreign interests could pull. First ~15 years of console era look like a **real Japanese attempt** to make the best products (even loaning skill to Rare with blank credits). Later, non-developers managing IP value **Beethoven-ized** credit to a few men instead of ex post facto naming R&D craft.

**Unpack:**

| Layer | Author meaning |
|-------|----------------|
| Early era | Craft-first Japanese company; Famicom excellence rhetoric |
| Vassal / linchpin | Not necessarily British stock ownership — **pullable dependencies** (format, silicon, occupation-era containment ecology) |
| Consolidation then rollback | Flagship market power → abandon 2D peak → let Sony/others take slack |
| Hardware hinge | NES relatively autonomous; SNES partner audio; **CD licensing** = IP choke |
| BC refusal | Library discontinuity as structural choice |
| N64 | Imposition / craft purge more than upgrade |
| Credit | Beethoven/Mozart nouns over R&D staffers |
| Continuity | Same pattern as [vacuum inverse](/docs/VACUUM_INVERSE.md) + Hamano erasure |

---

## 2. Creation timeline (compressed)

| Year | Beat | Independence / sabotage read |
|------|------|-------------------------------|
| **1889** | Fusajiro Yamauchi founds Nintendo (Kyoto **hanafuda**) | Domestic family firm; cards, not foreign console plot |
| **1945–52** | US-led **SCAP** occupation reorganizes Japan | Broader containment ecology; Nintendo not a SCAP “restricted concern” zaibatsu target in the usual lists — **weak** founding-vassal proof |
| **1949** | Hiroshi Yamauchi becomes president | Family continuity through occupation |
| **1970s–80** | Toys → arcade → *Game & Watch* | Domestic diversification |
| **1983** | **Famicom** (Ricoh custom CPU/PPU/APU stack) | Peak “best we can” craft; US **NES** adds **lockout** (10NES) — Nintendo controlling *third parties*, not foreigners controlling Nintendo |
| **1985–89** | NES West / third-party license monopoly | Consolidation of market behind Nintendo flag — **documented** |
| **1988–91** | Sony **SPC700** for SNES audio; SNES CD / “Play Station” deal | Partner hands in pot; **format/royalty** fight begins |
| **1991 CES** | Sony announce → Nintendo public **Philips** pivot | Rupture; see [nintendo-sony-breakup.md](../nintendo-sony-breakup.md) |
| **1990–91** | **SNES/SFC** ships **without** NES backwards compatibility | Library break; 65C816 *could* have enabled BC path (architecture commentators note possibility) |
| **1994** | *DKC* pre-render peak on **stock SNES** | Craft apex of incremental 2D |
| **1994–96** | PlayStation; Square→PS; Philips CD-i Mario/Zelda without R&D | IP torn; vacuum for Kyoto craft |
| **1996** | **N64** (SGI Reality co-processor); cart+64DD weak vs CD | Author: **2D downgrade** imposition |
| **1997–** | *GoldenEye* / Rare 3D successes; *DK64* replaces Country line | Franchise substitution |
| **2001+** | GameCube / later gens regain 3D parity unevenly | “Eventually matched” then continued franchise/credit sabotage |
| **2010–14** | *Returns* / *Tropical Freeze* — vacuum inverse + Wise/Hamano theater | [VACUUM_INVERSE](/docs/VACUUM_INVERSE.md); Hamano dossier |
| **2023–25** | *Prime Remastered* / *Returns HD* credit wipes; *Prime 4* disaster | Policy continuity; Hamano as possible **blame face** on *Prime 4* (author) |

## 3. Vassal / postwar / “orders from abroad” — evidence test

### 3.1 What is documented

- **Occupation:** Japan’s postwar order was primarily **US SCAP** (MacArthur), not a British corporate takeover of Nintendo. Zaibatsu dissolution and restricted concerns targeted large combines; Nintendo as a Kyoto card/toy firm is **not** a clean SCAP “foreign board installed” case in public records surveyed here.
- **Yakuza / entertainment containment:** Sibling dossier argues Yakuza as Western-aligned remote control / media compliance arm — including speculative Nintendo–Sony compliance reading ([yakuza-remote-control-investigation.md](/governance/war/investigations/yakuza-remote-control-investigation.md)). **Documented:** Yakuza–showbiz entrenchment postwar (Adelstein; Kobe Geinosha). **Not documented:** cable from London ordering Yamauchi’s CES pivot.
- **British surface in Nintendo IP:** **Rare** (Ashby/Stamper, UK) as second-party; blank NES credits; Wise British credit face — [rare-nintendo-rd.md](../rare-nintendo-rd.md); Hamano three-tier read. That is **labor/credit vassalage on products**, not “Nintendo is a British company.”
- **Mariners (1992):** Yamauchi framed purchase as debt to US postwar growth — rhetoric of obligation, not proof of ownership-by-West of Nintendo.

### 3.2 Author-compatible reading (without overclaim)

**Stronger than “British owned Nintendo”:** Nintendo became the **prize** other electronics majors (Sony, Philips) tried to **tear IP/licensing from** — Super Disc terms, CD-i character licenses, Square platform switch. That matches “set up as huge prize” **after** it won the 8-bit market — a **target**, whether or not it was a **vassal at founding**.

**Linchpin model (author):** Early craft autonomy + later **pullable** dependencies (Sony audio supply relationship → CD contract → SGI N64 bet → Microsoft Rare buyout 2002) = foreign/domestic elite can reshape trajectory without owning the Kyoto share register.

### 3.3 Weaknesses (required)

| Claim | Weakness |
|-------|----------|
| British vassal from creation | Founding/control evidence points to **Yamauchi family** + **US** occupation ecology; British is stronger on **Rare/credit** and Yakuza *hypothesis*, not Nintendo stock |
| Yakuza kept Japan “docile” for Nintendo orders | Showbiz capture **documented**; Nintendo-specific order chain **not** |
| Multi-decade plot to consolidate then roll back | Consolidation **documented** (NES license monopoly); “then roll back by design” is **pattern inference** — also fits blunders, cart philosophy, Miyamoto taste, risk aversion |
| Orders from abroad | Partner **contracts** and market pressure are documented; **handler memos** are not |

---

## 4. Hardware — whose hands in the pot?

### 4.1 Famicom / NES — relatively autonomous craft stack

- Custom **Ricoh** CPU/PPU; Kaneoka-era APU lineage (Nintendo sound engineering).
- Public era rhetoric: make the best games/hardware they can (author memory + industry lore).
- **10NES lockout** (US): Nintendo forcing *licensees* into dependency — opposite vector from “foreigners force Nintendo uncompetitive.”
- **Author agree:** nothing in the Famicom design *requires* the CD-era IP choke. First ~15 years of console era do **not** look like self-sabotage peak.

### 4.2 SNES — SPC700 (Sony) vs CD-ROM (Sony/Philips)

**SPC700 / S-SMP (correct name — not “SBC”):** Designed by **Ken Kutaragi** (Sony), often in tension with Sony management; Ohga backed completion ([Eurogamer / Kutaragi bios](https://www.eurogamer.net/farewell-father-article); [Wikipedia SNES](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Nintendo_Entertainment_System)). Independent audio CPU + 64KB ARAM.

| Dependency | Force uncompetitive? | Author / dossier read |
|------------|----------------------|------------------------|
| **SPC700 supply** | **Weak choke** — another vendor could design a sample DSP; audio is swappable in principle | User correct: SPC ≠ CD lock. Still a **Sony relationship** that later enabled CD talks |
| **Super Disc / CD licensing & royalties** | **Strong choke** — format owner taxes software; Yamauchi feared loss of license monopoly | **Documented** kill mechanism ([nintendo-sony-breakup.md](../nintendo-sony-breakup.md); Hamano rupture §§) |
| Philips pivot | Political/licensing; CD-i IP without R&D | Documented disaster titles |

**Correction to “SPC = major influence forcing uncompetitiveness”:** Influence **yes** (relationship + later PlayStation lineage). **Forcing** NES-class uncompetitiveness **no** — the SNES was competitive; the **CD contract** was the IP-tearing weapon. Hamano dossier already rejects “Nintendo made hardware with no partners” whitewash — Ricoh/Sony/SGI always in the pot; bondage proof is **CD Super Disc**, not SPC alone.

### 4.3 Silicon partners always present

Ricoh (Famicom/SNES CPU), Sony (SPC), SGI (N64), later IBM/AMD/etc. **Tollbooth independence ≠ fab independence.** Aligns with Hamano “independence whitewash” claim.

## 5. Backwards compatibility fork — evidence they *could* have gone another way

**Documented choices:**

- SNES **not** native NES-compatible ([compatibility histories](https://medium.com/@razorbeamz/a-brief-history-of-backwards-compatibility-a0b553a20a0d)).
- Copetti: 65C816 choice leaves a “slight possibility” SNES was **originally planned** closer to NES compatibility ([Copetti SNES](https://classic.copetti.org/writings/consoles/super-nintendo/)).
- **Super Game Boy** (1994): cart that embeds Game Boy hardware so GB library runs on SNES — proves Nintendo **knew** the adapter/pass-through model ([Wikipedia SNES](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Nintendo_Entertainment_System)).
- Enhancement chips on carts (SA-1, Super FX, etc.): cart-side upgrade path **did** exist for power — not used to unify NES↔SNES libraries.
- **Satellaview** / download experiments: alternate distribution, not BC.

**Author counterfactual (not documented as cancelled product):** Dual-region carts; NES cart + SNES sound plugin; SNES playing NES via adapter analogous to SGB. **Evidence they understood the class of solution:** SGB + later GBC/GBA BC culture. **Evidence they refused it for home NES→SNES:** no official adapter. That refusal **does** obsolete attention to cross-generation maintenance — corroborates author’s “mistake” frame even if motive was cost/complexity/anti-piracy rather than foreign order.

## 6. N64 as 2D downgrade — craft purge

**Documented technical reality:**

- N64 draws “2D” as textured polygons; **no** classic hardware sprite/tile pipeline like SNES ([N64 manuals](http://ultra64.ca/files/documentation/online-manuals/man/kantan/step2/2-5.html); [Copetti N64](https://www.copetti.org/writings/consoles/nintendo-64/)).
- **4KB TMEM** texture limit → blurry/repeating textures; community consensus N64 is a **poor 2D machine** vs PS1/Saturn/SNES ([Retrocomputing.SE](https://retrocomputing.stackexchange.com/questions/8222/is-the-n64-incapable-of-2d-graphics)).
- Nintendo shipped **S2DEX** microcode to fake SNES-like sprites — admission that 2D needed a special path.

**Killer Instinct:**

- Arcade → **SNES** port kept pre-rendered / sprite fidelity closer to arcade language.
- **Killer Instinct Gold** (N64) rebuilt with 3D-ish presentation; widely noted as different/less arcade-accurate than SNES pre-render approach — fits author “blocks vs arcade” ear (verify per-build screenshots in follow-up).
- Point stands architecturally even without KI: **DKC-class pre-render 2D peaked on SNES**; N64 was optimized to abandon that peak for a 3D race Nintendo was late to, against partners who had just burned them on CD.

**Author read:** N64 = imposition that **fires the skill base** (2D programmers, sequence/chip composers) as industry moves to streaming/Redbook audio and polygon pipelines. “Losing Rare and Square no big loss” for *2D Country-class* future is author strategic claim — commercially Square/Rare losses were huge; for **craft tradition continuity** the claim is coherent.

**Weakness:** N64 also produced landmark 3D (*Ocarina*, *GoldenEye*); “only sabotage” underweights hits. Pattern claim is **wrong priority + 2D destruction**, not “zero good games.”

### 6b. *DKC* on N64 — impossible; *DK64* as substitute; the “franchise column” read

**Agree (author + Rare primary):** Authentic *Donkey Kong Country* 1–3 (pre-rendered 2D fidelity) was **not releasable as itself on N64**. Rare artists who built both said realtime N64 could not match DKC visuals; DKC models (NURBS / fixed side view) did not transfer; a **2.5D** Crash-like DKC successor was **scrapped after ~18 months** before they went full 3D collect-a-thon as *Donkey Kong 64* ([Nintendo Life / Stevenson](https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2019/11/feature_donkey_kong_64_devs_on_bugs_boxing_and_20_years_of_the_dk_rap); [GamesRadar](https://www.gamesradar.com/making-of-donkey-kong-64/)). *DK64* was the best **3D-path** product that hardware + mandate allowed — not a Country sequel.

**Nuance:** Lower-fi 2D via S2DEX was theoretically possible; **DKC-class** Country was not. That distinction matters.

**Author structural read — the N64 franchise column:** Imagine a chart of Nintendo’s long-running **original** franchises. The N64 column does not say “continue as before.” It says **end this mode; start something else** — and the replacements are **ugly / substandard** relative to the SNES craft peak. Country → *DK64* collectathon (not *DKC4*). Metroid 2D → later *Prime* on GC (not N64). Mid-tier SNES lines die. **Zelda** “continues” as *Ocarina of Time* / *Majora’s Mask* — author: same class as *DK64*: franchise noun survives, **damage is evident** (creepy/ugly 3D substitute, not *LttP*/*Link’s Awakening* craft continuity). Mario likewise mutates into *Mario 64* rather than another *World*/*Yoshi’s Island*-class 2D peak. Softening “literally none continue” only means **the IP label** survived; the **franchise operating system and quality standard** did not.

**Handheld exile → late console return (author pattern):** After the N64 cut, Nintendo **regulated classic 2D / top-down** to **handheld** (Zelda: *Oracle*s, *Minish Cap*, *Phantom Hourglass* / *Spirit Tracks*; Mario: *New Super Mario* starts on DS; Metroid: *Fusion* / *Zero Mission* on GBA; Country-ish: *DK Land* / GBA ports). Console stays on the 3D substitute path for years. **Much later**, 2.5D / top-down / side-scroll is **allowed back** on home hardware (*New Super Mario Bros. Wii*; *A Link Between Worlds* still 3DS; Switch-era *Link’s Awakening* remake, *Echoes of Wisdom*, *Returns*/*Tropical Freeze* as Country’s delayed console 2D return). Same control logic as vacuum inverse: exile the mode, let the audience forget, then shaped reintroduction on leadership’s timetable — not continuous craft.

**Counterargument at the time (author):** Keep SNES (and GB) licenses alive while N64 runs — overseas installed base would not die quietly; cutting too early risks unlicensed/grey revolution. **Documented wind-down (correct the guess):**

| Region | SNES/SFC end | vs GameCube |
|--------|--------------|-------------|
| NA | Hardware discontinued **1999**; last US retail games ~1997–98 | **Before** GC (Nov 2001 NA) |
| EU | ~1998 discontinue | Before GC |
| Japan | Hardware production until **2003-09-25**; last software ~**2000** (*Metal Slader Glory* Director’s Cut / Nintendo Power) | GC JP **2001-09-14** — SFC **hardware** outlasts GC launch; **software** license already largely dead |

So: “SNES license ends at GameCube start” is **too clean**. West killed SNES **before** GC; Japan kept **hardware** around longer (overlap), not a synchronized “GC day one kill licenses” event. Author still right that SNES was **kept alive past N64 launch** for market/political reasons, then extinguished as next-gen settled.

### 6c. GameCube window → Wii motion lock → *Returns* sabotage; *Star Fox Zero*; Switch cut

**GameCube (author + documented):** Realer general-purpose HW than N64 for mixed 2D/3D ambitions; Retro *Metroid Prime* hit by talking Kyoto craft into a classic reboot. **Author:** *Country Returns* **should** have been a Cube game — everyone knows the gap. **Documented:** No shipped Cube Country. Kelbaugh wanted DK as early as mid-2000s while Retro was on Prime; *Returns* (**codename F8 / “fate”**) only starts **April 2008** after Prime leads quit — **for Wii**, not Cube ([Iwata Asks](https://www.nintendo.com/en-gb/Iwata-Asks/Iwata-Asks-Donkey-Kong-Country-Returns/Iwata-Asks-Donkey-Kong-Country-Returns/1-Codename-Fate/1-Codename-Fate-212318.html); [Kotaku](https://kotaku.com/their-orders-are-to-make-a-better-donkey-kong-country-30895305)). Delay since *DKC3* (1996) → 2010 is the vacuum; Cube window closed without Country.

**Chronology correction:** Wii launched **2006**; *Returns* designed **into** Wiimote (Miyamoto slap / Jungle Beat → shake ground-pound) — not “Wii invented around Returns.” **Author sabotage read still stands:** leadership chose to **rebuild Country around motion** (and withhold Classic Controller) so the colossal demand hit is **gimped** — same generation-logic as N64 ending 2D modes. Playable button *Returns* waits until **HD 2025**; Hamano wiped ([VACUUM_INVERSE](/docs/VACUUM_INVERSE.md); Hamano claims 30–32).

***Star Fox Zero* (Wii U):** Franchise “return” locked to GamePad dual-screen + gyro; critically painful; **never** brought to Switch despite Platinum interest and other Wii U ports ([VGC](https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/platinum-wants-to-bring-star-fox-zero-to-switch/)). Same pattern: revival + **platform-unique control sabotage** + abandon.

**Switch / Switch 2 (author):** Switch as hard cut — what doesn’t port is **lost**; Switch 2 tightens the noose (prices, IP, online). Reputation as bad as it gets; something has to give. **Documented adjacent:** remaster credit wipes, Music app anonymity, VC/retro removals.

**Leadership vs staff (author):** Majority craft staff are good people; **leadership hijacked/corrupted** — there to **take blame** for fallout (same class as Yamamoto manager seat / Hamano *Prime 4* blame sink). Not a claim every engineer is a handler.

## 7. Self-sabotage / franchise / credit — continuing pattern

| Pattern | Documented / author |
|---------|---------------------|
| N64 = end 2D franchise OS; *DK64* not Country | Rare: DKC fidelity impossible; 2.5D scrapped (§6b) |
| SNES kept alive past N64, then extinguished | NA 1999 / JP hardware 2003; not exactly “GC day-one” (§6b) |
| Country → *DK64* vacuum → shaped *Returns* | [VACUUM_INVERSE](/docs/VACUUM_INVERSE.md) |
| *Returns* designed for Wii motion; Classic path denied; HD wipe | Documented Miyamoto slap → shake; Hamano claims 30–32 |
| Cube should have had Country; didn’t | Author; Retro on Prime then Wii F8 2008 |
| *Star Fox Zero* motion/dual-screen; no Switch | Documented; Platinum wants port |
| *Returns* shake-roll / HD credit wipe; Yamamoto Project Manager, Hamano omitted | Hamano claims 30–32 |
| Metroid / Prime mishandling; *Prime 4* disaster; Hamano credited | Author: **blame sink** |
| Sound Team / Music app / remaster “original development staff” | Documented generalization |
| Beethoven-ize credit to few men | Wise / Yamamoto nouns; R&D staff denied ex post facto naming |
| IP harden, pirate war, kill retro availability | Documented; **author:** not simple profit |
| Early Rare blank credits while Nintendo loans IP/skill | Documented opacity |
| Leadership takes blame; staff craft | Author |

**Author continuity:** Early loan of craft outward (Rare) without naming → later clamp that **credit must route to manager-faces** → remasters erase even those teams. Matches “who needs self-worth in IP decided credits lead back to certain men.”

## 8. Corroboration vs weaknesses (summary matrix)

| Thesis piece | Corroboration | Weakness |
|--------------|---------------|----------|
| Early craft-first Japan | Famicom dominance; family firm; lockout as *Nintendo* power | Still used Ricoh; not autarkic |
| Postwar Western reorganization | SCAP economy; Yakuza–showbiz docs | US-led; Nintendo-specific remote control unproven |
| British vassal | Rare/Wise British credit; Yakuza dossier British angle | No British ownership of Nintendo found |
| Market consolidation behind flag | NES license monopoly **strong** | Normal monopolist behavior also fits |
| SPC = forced dependency | Sony relationship real | Switchable; SNES succeeded |
| CD = IP tear | Contract/royalty fear **documented**; CD-i without R&D | Also cart philosophy / load times |
| BC refusal as mistake | SGB proves adapter literacy; no NES adapter | Cost/complexity motives available |
| N64 2D downgrade | TMEM/sprites **documented**; DKC peak on SNES | N64 3D hits; SGI bet had technical fans inside |
| DKC1–3 impossible on N64; *DK64* best 3D path | Rare artists: fidelity gap; 2.5D scrapped 18 mo. | Lower-fi 2D still theoretically possible |
| N64 = franchise-mode termination column | Country/Metroid-2D/mid-tier die or mutate; Zelda/Mario “continue” as **ugly 3D substitutes** (*OoT*/*Majora* ≈ *DK64* class — IP survives, craft damage evident) | Mainstream still canonizes *OoT*; author rejects that as disproof of damage |
| 2D exiled to handheld, returned to console much later | Zelda/Mario/Metroid/DK 2D on GB–3DS; home 2D/2.5D returns years later (NSMB Wii, *Returns*, Switch Zelda 2D) | Handheld also had real craft peaks; not only “prison” |
| SNES kept for overseas; ends near GC | NA dead 1999; JP HW to 2003; soft ~2000 | Not a single “GC launch kills license” event |
| *Returns* should have been Cube; Wii motion sabotage | Vacuum 1996–2010; F8 starts 2008 for Wii; shake design documented | No cancelled Cube Country primary found |
| *Star Fox Zero* / Switch cut | Gyro+GamePad lock; no Switch port; Platinum wants it | Could be “hard to port” not only malice |
| Self-sabotage vs profit | Retro removals, credit wipes, franchise gaps | Could be incompetence, risk aversion, anti-piracy dogma |
| Hamano *Prime 4* blame face | Credit + quality gap pattern | Needs track-level ear dossier |
| Leadership hijacked; staff good | Pattern of blame seats (Yamamoto PM / Hamano credit) | Organizational psychology also fits |
| Linchpins not founding fail | Timeline: sabotage loudest **after** CD rupture | “Plot” vs “path dependence” underdetermined |

---

## 9. Author’s open claims

1. Nintendo’s **dangerous** era begins with **SNES partner + CD IP fight**, not Famicom founding.
2. **SPC ≠ CD** — audio chip relationship ≠ format royalty bondage.
3. BC refusal + N64 2D architecture = **craft discontinuity** that looks like imposition.
4. Consolidation-then-rollback is a **pattern** compatible with foreign/domestic elite pressure (Yakuza dossier; partner electronics) without requiring British stock ownership.
5. Credit Beethovenization + remaster wipes = same control class as Hamano/Wise cases.
6. *Prime 4* Hamano credit may be **blame assignment**, not authorship (author ear — open).
7. N64 column = **end classic 2D franchise OS**; *DKC* impossible on that HW; *DK64* = substitute; *OoT*/*Majora* = same **ugly/substandard continuation** class as *DK64* — IP label survives, damage evident; **2D regulated to handheld**, home 2.5D/top-down return **much later** (§6b).
8. *Returns* motion lock / *Star Fox Zero* / Switch non-ports = repeating **platform-unique sabotage** of franchise returns (§6c).
9. Leadership = blame sink; craft staff mostly not the problem (author).

## Investigator notes

- User session 2026-09-06: full vassal/hardware/sabotage thesis; correct “SBC” → **SPC700**.
- 2026-09-06: DKC impossible on N64 (Rare); franchise column; SNES EOL vs GC **corrected**; Wii before Returns; Star Fox Zero / Switch.
- Occupation primarily **US SCAP** — do not smuggle “British owned Nintendo” without evidence; keep British on Rare/Yakuza rails.
- Agent transcript: `12117906-f4fe-46c2-889e-40975d0bbffe`.
