You have to be really bored to pick up a book or watch a movie called *Men Who Stare at Goats*. The title itself is a filter. The whole project seems designed so the majority looks away at first glance.

I only ended up watching the film because it came on automatically on Prime. Same experience most people had: weird quirky movie, interesting because Clooney is in it acting strange — and then a major revelation. There are apparently real people on this planet who think they were Jedi Knights trained by the U.S. government, especially around the time *Star Wars* came out.

That was an extremely hard disclosure to swallow. I really couldn’t believe it. I couldn’t believe someone would make a movie like that, lend it any credibility, and suggest it ties back to real testimony from U.S. soldiers and other people. I started this investigation because I wanted to see the truth of the movie and the book. What showed up pretty quickly is that both were designed to make people look away — and to mock the people who were originally part of this program.

Some of them might still be alive, living in cities somewhere. If they tried to tell anyone about the program they were in, they would look a lot like Clooney looks in the movie: absolutely crazy, without a shred of proof.

Ronson interviewed that world and still got critical codes wrong. Visibility is the cleanest example. The operators were not talking about vanishing from cameras. They meant not being seen: not being noticed, not being identified, walking among people without the observer treating you as present. Ronson’s own sources say that adaptation out loud. He still lets the culture hear “invisibility” as a magic trick that failed. He screws that one up even while half-agreeing with the correct reading.

Walking through walls is worse. Moving through walls was code for remote viewing — the functionality that actually featured in the declassified programs. Framing that code as a general crashing his nose into drywall and failing is an extreme violation of the duty to tell the truth from the documents and testimony. Another insult sits in the origin story itself. The implication is that the whole international stack happened by accident: paranoia, a fake article, copycat fear. That is clear containment and misdirection. It is rather insulting. It makes everyone in all the governments involved look very stupid — as if they could not detect this kind of capability in their own literature, their own people, or their own labs without having to spy on the enemy or get faked out by a magazine. Real programs do not bootstrap from a joke clip alone. The French-hoax fable is there so the audience can file psychic warfare under “Cold War silliness” and stop asking who trained whom on purpose.

Apparently the book is “about” Abu Ghraib. He fails, inside his own pages, to honestly explain why Abu Ghraib would have anything to do with the Jedi program or remote viewing. The First Earth Battalion loudspeaker hobbyhorse is not the origin of sexual humiliation in war. That abuse has a long institutional history. It did not start in the 1970s New Age Army manuals.

## What the comedy subtracted

In 1953 he went out a New York hotel window after an LSD dosing at a Deep Creek Lodge retreat — the official story sold for decades as bad-trip suicide. Ronson also follows the **privatization** of the psychic unit after the mid-1990s wind-down — retired viewers as consultants, rival schools, cut-throat civilian market. In that chapter he draws a line toward **Heaven’s Gate**: the 1997 mass suicide, the “Away Team” costumes, Hale-Bopp closure language. Critics argue over how tight that adjacency is. The book still puts it on the page. After the uniform program breaks up, the same human-potential and “exit” talk can slide into a cult and end in disaster. The comedy skips that part. It is easy to laugh at Clooney in goggles. It is harder to laugh at discarded operators and Heaven’s Gate.

## Abu Ghraib was strategy, not goat lore

The reason for Abu Ghraib was not Barney the Purple Dinosaur and it was not Jim Channon’s warrior-monk fax. ## Promote first, contain leftovers later

*Star Wars* came out in the same era as this stack. That film was geared toward making people believe these powers were real, even if misunderstood. If the goal in 1977 had been mockery, they would have shipped a 2009-style comedy then — not a beloved space epic with Jedi shown in a noble, artistic way.

First came mass promotion. Then came the ops window: First Earth language, Project Jedi ladders, Fort Meade remote viewing. ## What Episode IV and V already showed

In the book, Project Jedi is told as a ladder: diet and body prep; invisibility adapted to finding a way of not being seen (“If you’re not observed, you are invisible. You only exist if someone sees you”); then kill a goat by staring — stop the heart. Episode IV mostly gets it right. Obi-Wan’s “invisibility” works as failure of notice, not optical cloaking. He moves through Mos Eisley and the Death Star without being treated as a threat. Every serious *Star Wars* fan already felt some kind of real-life tie-in. There has to be an equivalence for what those films showed. Turns out there is.

Adjust a couple of costume facts and the basics hold. Everything you saw in *Star Wars* is actually true.

Levitation is true. The Force — the environment, the universe itself, the æther — guiding and constraining action is true. Mainstream talk calls related structure fields in vacuum; the substrate here is still named æther. The ability to be invisible and walk among people without being seen is definitely true. Not everyone can do it. It has far more to do with energy and spirituality than with physical motion. Those layers combine.

The way Obi-Wan dies and preserves his soul in the world without scattering into the Bardos is true, and it is easy to cover in Bardo mythology. Someone with strong focus can decide where the soul goes in the afterlife, and can stick around if they choose. They become far more powerful than they were while living. That power is hard to ascertain from the living side — it can sound godly — but reality has major limits, which is why spirits do not casually manipulate daily life. They mostly stay out of human affairs. It takes an extreme exception, like Obi-Wan’s, to remain and keep guiding someone. The physics behind it are real.

Jedi as a word shows up in Lucas’s papers years before the 1977 premiere. Public Army “Jedi Warrior” branding is easiest to cite in the 1980s. That floor is not a ceiling. It is exceedingly likely people in the psychic and warrior-monk lane were already told they were Jedi — or occupied that slot — before the theaters filled. Remote viewing and related work already existed before the premiere either way. The myth and the program drank from the same well.

## The real program under the joke

There was a real program to find gifted people — children, mostly — and train them as Jedi Knights in real life, then put them on missions to change the world. On those missions they thought they were heroes. Mostly they were used as spies without the political context needed to make a right choice. They lived in MKULTRA-style bubble lives: radical individual skill, thin news diet, almost no map of factions or consequences. Following orders blindly was the design.

Standard remote-viewing tradecraft already starves the viewer of meaning. You get a coordinate or a sealed envelope. You do not get the war, the coup, the hostage politics, or the legality. That can be sold as “reducing cueing.” It also means you cannot refuse on moral grounds, because you never learn what the task is for. Add false feedback, theatrical hits, and cover stories about who funds the product, and you have a sensor — not a citizen. Clooney’s Cassady is the public face of that isolation: jargon, confidence, and almost no ordinary political map.

Their actions were mostly spy actions. The dark-Jedi notion — which the goats film personifies as Hooper, and which the book’s dark half already documents — makes clear that the worst of these agents had the ability to stare at a goat or a hamster, and possibly even a person, and kill them. Of course that kind of power has limits. It had to stay in the shadows. Eventually the whole stack had to be contained so completely that nobody would even believe the powers were possible.

That is why Clooney’s face works as the vaccine. Speak the truth after 2009 and you sound like the crazy man from the comedy — not like a discarded intelligence asset asking for a hearing while still alive.

## *Star Wars* itself was contained

The notion that George Lucas alone “came up with the story” does not hold. He may have written an initial draft. Many hands touched it before final form, and it changed significantly. He then exited with little interest in the sequel, and only came back hard for the third film after the sequel’s major success. Mark Hamill himself may have been replaced after the holiday special — another contained object. Much of that special’s expansion work, including new-character energy around figures like Boba Fett, was lifted into Episode V without credit to the people who actually built those beats.
