Nothing in TCP/IP forbids a vaccine skeptic and an honest clinician from finding each other. Nothing in HTTP prevents a 9/11 researcher from publishing chronology and having it indexed fairly next to a debunk footer stack.

## A body without an immune system

Extend the metaphor one step: a country is a living body. Healthy tissue recognizes pathogens, routes antibodies, clears infection before it becomes systemic. COVID-19 was a perfect stress test of immune failure — not only in hospitals, but in information.

Victims are found on social media and dating apps, then held in text: scripted calls, chat spam, insult registers, **homework loops** that keep you paying (“deposit more to unlock”). When someone hesitates, the mesh upgrades them to a **credibility slot** — fake video advisers, calendar withdrawal meetings, an evangelist tone on camera. Extraction runs through a fake investment interface fed by romance and social graphs. Estonian court records cite €100M+ in reported losses; a €8.5M payment after conviction bought release — impunity priced in. Operators work from Ukraine; victims span EU, Russia, and CIS; home-court prosecution stays rare.

Floor slang — “mammoth,” “sucker” — matches GI-TOC reporting on Russian and Ukrainian scam labor markets. When victims push back, meshes escalate to threats and blackmail.

Why Alef matters for this essay: it is modern internet intransigence as product. Not “scammers exist” — **regulated engagement**: who may talk to you, where, with what tone, whether text counts as conversation. The internet still connects machines. It fails to connect minds under pressure because industrial meshes clog the flows, opaque layers sort gardens above merit, and blacklisted topics never surface for the body politic to reject or accept on evidence.
